If you have a lot of swelling it is helpful to remember the R.I.C.E principal

Rest- Allow the muscle to begin recovery without adding any extra pressure to the Injury

Ice- Apply straight away to the Injury to help slow down the circulation and reduce swelling. You should only apply ice for 10 to 15 minutes insuring not to give yourself an ice burn. Apply a damp cloth to the Injury with the ice. You should ice several times a day.

Compression-is applied at the occurance of the injury to restrict bleeding, apply using a firm pad with strapping holding it in place. Continue this routine for a few days.

Elevate- Always elevate the injured area to above the torso. To reduce swelling from the injured area.

Massage applied skilfully, is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system. Received regularly this may help athletes prevent injury. But you don't have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. It is also for good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. Sports massage is a type of swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down knots in the muscles and increase flexability
